The Complete American Eagle Credit Card Review

Introduction to the American Eagle Credit Card

For a number of years, American Eagle Outfitters has stood as one of the most popular clothing retailers in not only the United States, but in other locations throughout the world. The company is noted for offering high-quality, fashionable apparel for men, women, and kids. You can also find a deep inventory of personal care items, as well as various accessories for a range of tastes and interests. There is no question that AEO is one of the most popular clothing retailers to be found anywhere. In addition to being able to shop for everything they offer at their website, you can also take advantage of more than 1000 physical store locations. These stores can be found in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Hong Kong, and even China.

The company exists under two brands. You naturally have the American Eagle Outfitters brand, but you can also purchase apparel and more under the well-regarded Aerie brand. This is a very popular retailer, and there are more than a few people who use AEO as their primary destination for all things related to their fashion choices. It makes sense then that AEO would offer a credit card.

In fact, the retailer offers two credit cards. Both are quite solid by the standards of store credit cards. There are a number of elements to both cards that you will want to keep in mind. By and large, however, these cards are largely the same. You just get a little more freedom with the AEO card offered through Visa.

American Eagle has been offering some of the most fashionable clothes and accessories in the U.S. since 1977. In the decades since it has enjoyed unparalleled success, opening up over 1,000 stores around the world.

American Eagle has been offering some of the most fashionable clothes and accessories in the U.S. since 1977. In the decades since it has enjoyed unparalleled success, opening up over 1,000 stores around the world.

Of course, in this time, it has spawned legions of loyal customers who adore the quality and designs of its clothing. If you find yourself regularly wearing the latest designs from American Eagle, you might be considering signing up for its AEO Connected Credit Card.

This card has a wide range of benefits – but does a high APR and closed loop make it worthwhile? Here’s a deeper dive into what this credit card has to offer, and whether it’s worth taking the plunge to get great discounts on your new threads.

American Eagle Credit Card Pros And Cons

All things considered, this is one of the better store credit cards on the market. The first thing we like about this card is the fact that you have two options to work with. They both offer essentially the same pros and cons. You have the AEO store credit card, and then the AEO Visa credit card. Arguably the biggest difference between them is that with the AEO Visa card, you have a little more shopping freedom. The AEO store card is designed to be used exclusively at AEO and its affiliates.

One of our favorite benefits of this card comes down to the straightforward terms and conditions. We will cover those in greater detail later on. For now, simply appreciate the fact that either card is not complicated in any sense of the word. Obviously, you will still want to read over the terms and conditions before fully committing to anything.

The sheer volume of AEO stores throughout the world is worth mentioning again. Yes, you can shop for everything you need through the American Eagle Outfitters website. At the same time, you also have more than 1000 store locations to take advantage of. Regardless of where you live, particularly in the United States, there is an excellent chance that an AEO store is within your area. As we mentioned before, many people rely on AEO for virtually all of their fashion shopping. You can do the same, if the styles and prices strike you as reasonable and appealing.

There is no annual fee with either AEO cards. It is also nice to simply have a choice between two types of credit cards in the first place. On the one hand, the American Eagle store card is ideal for anyone looking for a secondary card with impressive rewards, and who also happens to love all things American Eagle. The Visa-supported version of this card gives you those benefits, a handful of very slight differences in fees and terms, as well the ability to use the card wherever Visa is accepted. While the bulk of these rewards are based around those who shop at AEO stores, the Visa version of the card will nonetheless reward you, regardless of where you decide to use it. Just remember that you must apply and be approved for either of these cards.

Another thing we like about this card? Being approved for one of these cards also comes with the benefit of being automatically enrolled in their rewards program. This would be the program that rewards you for simply shopping at the store on a regular basis. These are also benefits that can added on to the cashback bonuses and other features that are associated with either AEO card. Right from the start, you can look forward to taking 25% off your first purchase through American Eagle Outfitters. We also like how easily you can build up to store credit. You earn fifteen points for every dollar you spend. In other words, getting 2500 points means you can enjoy ten dollars in store credit. If you are a frequent shopper with American Eagle, it really won’t take very long to build up those points. While it’s not the very best rewards structure for one of these cards, it is nonetheless still one of the most impressive you are going to find.

There are no annual fees to worry about either.

Rewards

As we mentioned earlier, there are some pretty good rewards to be found here. Of course, those rewards are largely dependent on whether or not you shop at American Eagle. How often you shop at AEO will also determine how much you actually benefit from the rewards. Still, if you can meet both of those basic requirements, we think you will be pleased with everything offered with either one of these credit cards.

You also get a 20% coupon for your birthday, as well as exclusive opportunities to take advantage of their major savings events. You also get $0 liability from fraud. You will also want to remember that all of the rewards we have covered here can be extended to Aerie stores, as well.

You can earn back anywhere from 1%-15% in rewards. Again, this puts the card solidly in the middle of the best store-centric credit card options currently available. These are good rewards for what really should be a secondary credit card. The fact that you can also earn points on purchases at other stores, if you are willing to opt for the AEO Visa card, is something else that we like about the reward side of things.

Finally, you can also earn freebies just for buying a certain amount of something. For example, if you buy 5 pairs of jeans from American Eagle Outfitters, they will give you a sixth pair absolutely free.

Let’s begin with the rewards that you’ll get with the AEO Connected Credit Card. After all, these are the reason that you’ll be most interested in this particular card. It’s important to understand that there are two cards on offer. We’ll look at each one in turn.

AEO Connected Credit Card

This card gives holders 20% off their first AEO Connected credit card purchase. This means that if you’ve been planning a large order, you can maximize your savings. Naturally, it’s best to use this discount on a significant purchase.

With this card, you’ll also benefit from free standard shipping. This is a nice touch and depending on the frequency with which you shop at AE, it can lead to some significant savings over the course of the year.

On those purchases, you’ll also earn 15 points for each dollar that you spend. We appreciate the transparency that AE offers: 2,500 points result in a $10 reward. Whether or not this is a favorable rate depends on the frequency with which you spend and the value of the items that you purchase.

The benefits don’t end there though. You’ll also receive a generous 20% birthday coupon, meaning that you don’t have to feel guilty when treating yourself to a new wardrobe! If you can bunch your purchases together, you’ll find that you can maximize the value of this coupon.

There are also a range of offers when you buy a certain number of items. If you purchase five pairs of jeans for example, you’ll receive one free. This also applies to bras. This is a nice touch that drives even more value for you. It’s important to note, however, that the terms and conditions dictate that clearance items cannot be used to contribute toward this total.

Cardholders also receive a personal shopping day coupon. There’s a significant lack of information about this on the AE website, but it’s essentially a one-time discount that can be used on any day of the year. Likewise, the “6 cardholder events each year” aren’t explained in any further detail. It can be assumed that these are special discount days, though.

As a tech-savvy company, you’ll also have access to online account management via mobile and desktop. This makes it easy for you to track the points that you have generated and the activity on your account.

You also receive $0 fraud liability. This means that you aren’t held responsible for unauthorized charges that are made on your account. This level of protection helps you to shop and enjoy the card with a peace of mind.

AEO Connected Visa Credit Card

This card is almost identical to the previous option, but it varies in that you can use the card outside of the AEO ecosystem anywhere that Visa is accepted. When you make those purchases, you’ll receive 5 points for every dollar that you spend. This is a pretty significant amount, and it can help you to quickly build up the points that you need to make big savings on your purchases.

With that said, the terms on this card are unfavorable. We’ll jump into more detail soon.

Point Value

AE is very transparent with how much their points are worth. Unlike some other cards, you can easily calculate exactly how much your purchases are helping you to make. This means you can choose whether or not to get the card based upon how much you spend in the store. The more money you spend, the great the value of the card becomes.

Securing Approval

Both cards are subject to credit approval. This process can take a while, and it does mean that you won’t receive the card right away. This is important to bear in mind if you’re getting ready to make a purchase and want to benefit from the 20% discount.

You’ll have to wait until you receive the card before you can make your purchase, which is not often the case with these types of store cards. This can be frustrating for some users who want to get started right away.

Zero Annual Fees

Neither of the cards come with an annual fee. This means that if you shop somewhat regularly at AEO, it could be worth registering for one to accumulate points slowly over time.

High APR

The Annual Percentage Rate on the cards is very high at 27.74%. This can be really hazardous if you have outstanding balance on the card, so it’s recommended to avoid this card unless you can be absolutely certain you will handle it correctly. Otherwise, you risk damaging your credit rating and generating large amounts of interest.

With late fees of up to $38, the risks are even more severe.

The high APR is one of the least attractive parts of this card. There are other alternative cards which offer 0% APR for a set period of time, and lower rates over the lifetime of the card. You should take this into serious consideration when deciding whether or not to go with the AEO card.

Pricing and Interest Rates

Given that the AEO Connected Credit Card is locked into the AE ecosystem, there aren’t cash advance or foreign transaction rates. If you decide to go for the Visa Credit Card, however, you’ll find some unfavorable rates.

The Cash Advance APR sits at 28.74%, while the Cash Advance Fee is set at $10 or 5% each time, whichever is greater. The foreign transaction fee makes this card an unattractive choice for such operations, given that it is set at 3% of each transaction.

These high rates mean that you should never really use the card in these situations. You can find superior alternatives on the market and if you do use one of these cards in an emergency, you should be sure to pay off your balance promptly to avoid large fees.

Limited Redemption Options

While the rewards are attractive, they only really make sense if you’re an avid shopper at AEO. If not, you’ll find that being restricted to the AEO ecosystem is fairly pointless. There are alternative cards available which can help you to earn points on a range of spending categories while offering you superior APR and no foreign transaction fees.

Rebuilding Credit

If you’re looking to get a credit card in order to repair a damaged credit card, you may be tempted by this card. Given that rebuilding your credit history requires you to make regular purchases and payoffs, however, this might not be the best option for you. That is, of course, unless you shop incredibly regularly as AE.

If you’re looking to rebuild your credit, you will find that there are many superior options out there which offer you favorable terms. These can help you to rebuild your credit rating in a way that’s free of risk and more effective. Make sure to check our reviews on the best 0% credit cards.

Terms and Conditions

As with any credit card, you should be diligent when it comes to reading the fine print. The terms and conditions are very important, and they’ll determine how you use the card. A good understanding of the terms and conditions can help you to maximize the value that you receive, while a poor understanding can lead to suboptimal use and even financial troubles.

Like many store-specific credit cards, you will need to be aware of your credit score before applying. To qualify for the AEO store card, you are going to need a pretty good credit card. Not surprisingly, as far as the AEO Visa card is considered, you are going to need strong-to-perfect credit. Both cards are largely related to your AEO purchases, so it doesn’t particularly matter which one you go for. If you are strongly considering the possibility of using the AEO Visa as a secondary card, then you may want to just go ahead and apply for that one instead.

Regardless of the card you choose, the APR is pretty much the same. The APR of 25.48% with these cards put them just a bit above the average for store cards. As is the case with virtually all store credit cards, you want to be careful that you don’t take the balance with you from one month to the next. Doing so can cause a variety of problems.

The maximum late fee for this card is $38. The grace period is 23 days. You will also want to be aware of the 28.99% cash advance APR. There is also a foreign transaction fee of 3%, but this element is exclusive to the Visa American Eagle Outfitters credit card. The cash advance fee is 5%, with the minimum standing at $10. This is pretty much the standard with any store credit cards you might encounter.

All things considered, this is one of the better store cards you are going to find. We like the way American Eagle Outfitters gives you two different ways to take advantage of a store-based card. The rewards are in line with the best examples of these cards. The drawbacks include facts only being able to get the best benefits by shopping at AEO stores. However, that is pretty much the deal with any store-specific credit cards you will research. If this is a feature that bothers you, then you may want to just go ahead and give up on these cards altogether.

Comparing the drawbacks of this card to the benefits, we would venture to say that the benefits far outweigh the negatives. This card may just prove to be essential for those who love to shop at American Eagle Outfitters. For everyone else, we would suggest some further research. Even if you only shop at this store a few times a year, this card can still prove to be quite useful. We can easily recommend this card to AEO enthusiasts, among others.

The Bottom Line on the American Eagle Credit card

If you find that you shop at AEO regularly, then this could be a good option for you. You’d have to shop there very frequently for the card to be worthwhile, though.

If you’re not an avid shopper at the store, then we certainly recommend that you look elsewhere for an alternative. You will be able to find superior offers from different providers which give you points and bonuses in different spending categories and give you more options when it comes to spending those points.

The high APR rate is also unattractive, in addition to the steep 3% foreign transaction fee. These high fees mean that you must demonstrate extreme caution when settling your balance each month.

The delay in receiving the card is also problematic, meaning that shoppers can’t quickly benefit from the 20% discount on their first purchase. Instead, they must wait a while until they receive the card.
